We're OFFICIALLY Homeschooling Our Kids! Why We Decided To Homeschool our Preschoolers

If you have been following my blog or social media for any amount of time, then you know that I share my life journey with you. I try to share the good, the bad the ugly. I mostly write about the bad and ugly here on the blog and post pictures of the good on my social media because let’s be honest……sometimes I need the highlight reel to remind me of what IS good. So here I am again, sharing with you all another chapter in our family journey. My goal is to connect with those that may be in the same position as I was in and trying to figure it out. We need more connection, more open communication and that’s just my personality. Anything I learn, I will probably share it.

So…its true! We are officially a homeschooling family. I never thought I would say those words. I have always thought “those” moms were a little crazy and that burden was TOO heavy to carry. I mentioned it a ton of times on my various social media channels, but here I am….that crazy mom. For one, I started thinking about homeschooling after I had some issues with my kids current school. Nothing really bad, but enough for me to start looking into other options for them. That was back in November 2019. I remember calling my friend and asking her some questions. I also asked other homeschool moms and saught out any and everyone that could help me. The book my friend Sethie referred me to “Homeschool Bravely” really made it clear. Even then, I resisted. That was back in January 2020.

Then the pandemic hit. Our kids early childhood Christian private school closed down. I say school, because it was not a daycare. They went to a school that started at 18 months and went through 12th grade. They could have literally stayed there the whole time. Once the pandemic hit, they tried to do things with us online, my daughters attention span was not having it and trying to teach 2 year olds on YouTube……is quite a task. You need to bring out ALL the bells and whistles and have AMAZING music to keep there attention. Needless to say, the last two weeks of March was a wash.

Going into April, I saw on Myleik’s instagram page a curriculum that she found called Playing Preschool by The Busy Toddler. I looked it over and said, I don’t want April to be a wash for their learning so I bought it. I was only $39 at the time. I used on both my kids and over the course of the month, they learned so much. It was then that I thought, wow….I know there learning patterns and behaviors BETTER than even their teachers. I see how they learn and as long as I had the tools I could do this. Now don’t get me wrong…..at first, I was losing it. I cried, was stressed out, was looking BUSTED because I felt like I had no time to myself. My husband was working longer and extra hours. Having to think of breakfast, lunch and dinner was a lot and my house was a HOT MESS. Listen….a MASSIVE tornado that ADDED to the stress of this whole thing.

But in my silent prayers at night when I would have my quiet time with God, I would hear him whisper “you can do hard things Bridgette”. The ONLY other time he whispered that to me was before I became a Dallas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for abused children back in July 2019. Those words made me realize, I can do more than I think and I am much stronger than I give myself credit for. So here I was again talking to God about doing a “hard thing”. YES! It was going to be a lot. So I took my conversation to my husband. He had to be on the same page with me on this. We were going to do this together with me being the main facilitator of it all. His questions were “Are you sure you can handle this load?” “What can I do to help given my schedule” “Do you think you will be too stressed out?” My answers were “No, I can’t handle this load alone. But with God and your help, I can do this.” I also went on to tell him that I needed breaks and times when he took over a few times a day and on the weekends. We solidified a schedule that worked for us.

I truly believe there will be some days ahead that I think, what in the world. I literally had that thought the DAY after we withdrew our kids from their school. I had been looking forward to the day they could go back! So to realize, I had made the jump and there was no going back anytime soon was a lot. Every single day, I took my worries and concerns to God. This is going to be a very close journey with God as He leads because as she stated in “Homeschool Bravely” I feel CALLED to this. God has orchestrated our lives for me to do this and with HIM all things are possible. I shared more in the video below but that’s pretty much the basis.

Also, I don’t know what going on with this whole pandemic things so its a public health concern as well. So yes, I will be sharing this journey…..I want to thank EVERYONE out there that creates content around homeschooling. I have probably read it or listened to it in the past month or so. So of course, I’m going to give back as well. Here we go!

From Storage Room to New Office Space

It’s done! Well 95% done...I have a few more pieces to add. This has been my project for the past 3 weeks. When Josiah was born, my old office was turned into his nursery. My office became a corner of the house. Then my hubby started working from home a few days a week and took over that corner half the time. Then Ms. Rona came...and my corner of the house was no longer mine.

After a few weeks, I decided that I NEEDED my own space in the house. This room hasn’t been used much and started to become just a storage room instead of our guest room. I still wanted my guest to have somewhere to sleep so I purchase this daybed that I repurposed as a couch when no one is staying with us. The bottom comes out and there is another mattress underneath so two people technically can sleep in this room.

At any rate, there one more reason I needed this space and I’ll share that soon, but I’m just glad to I can breathe again! Mommas, get your space back! It’s sooooo needed! 😘😘

4 Easy Steps to Vidalia Onion Casserole

This blog post has been sponsored by the Vidalia Onion Committee. Links featured within, not inclusive of the official Vidalia Onion Committee website or previously sponsored content, are not sanctioned by the Vidalia Onion Committee.

Delicious, delightful yet easy to make is the mindset that I have when deciding on dishes with my family. With my kids home all day, my time has been limited. I’m adjusting just like everyone else to this new normal that we are living. Mealtime is my favorite time of the day because it brings our family together around our common love of food. It is a place where we bond over our favorite foods. Even though my kids are 4 and 2, I still see it in them that this is their favorite time of the day. It doesn’t last very long but it is a place that I am cultivating to be a place of safety, food, and fun between. Dinner at The Reed household will be one that my kids will remember felt like home in every way. No matter where they go in the world, our dinner table will be a place to reconvene as a family team.

Recently, I had a box of sweet Vidalia onions arrive at my front door, and I could not wait to start creating my favorite dish, Vidalia Onion Casserole. This one is special in our home. It's good for the whole family and only requires a few easy steps and only a few ingredients. I will eventually make some nice tasty onion rings with these sweet onions but for now, we will focus on the super-easy family meal that moms will love. It only requires a few ingredients and four easy steps:

I wanted to share with my readers this yummy recipe that can be paired with your favorite poultry or even a nice Jasmin rice on the side.

Ingredients:

4 Vidalia onions, peeled and sliced into rings

1 stick vegan butter

1 envelope Ritz crackers, crushed

¼ cup butter, melted

1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

If you’re vegan or vegetarian, feel free to exchange out the butter or cheddar cheese with alternatives. It still tastes amazing due to the sweetness of the onions.

Here is how I prep and layout my ingredients:

IMG_0785.jpeg

Now we’re ready to get started!

  • 1. Sauté onions in butter until tender.

  • 2. Crush crackers into additional melted butter.

  • 3. Layer onions, cracker crumbs, and cheese in a casserole dish, repeating until all ingredients are used.

  • 4. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes, until hot and cheese is melted.

That’s it! 4 easy steps for you and your family to enjoy! A few things to note: If you have leftover onions you can make sure they last the longest by putting them in clean sheer pantyhose and tying up the knots in between the onions. When you are ready to use them, all you have to do is cut them at the knot and continue to store the rest. A tip I learned from the Vidalia! Enjoy!

Let me know if you tried it and your thoughts! Did you do it the regular way or the vegan way! I’d love to know!

The Reality Of Childcare in America

IMG_7346.jpeg

This is a sponsored post but all opinions are my own

One thing I love is sharing my journey through motherhood. I started blogging with the mindset that other moms are out there need to know that someone else is experiencing something similar to what they experience. I also love sharing the good, bad, and just the in-between times. Today, I’m sharing my journey of finding childcare. This one is close to my heart.

When I had my daughter 4 years ago, I’ll never forget the first daycare I walked into. The price made me think that this was a top daycare near my home. As I walked out of the tour, I had tears in my eyes as I thought “I would never leave my child in there”. This is when I felt the weight of being torn from going back to work and the burden of finding childcare. I knew we were not in a position for me to stay home, so our search continued. I remember saying a prayer as my journey had just begun. I couldn’t imagine what other parents were going through as these prices were outrageous. It was not only hard to find quality childcare, but it was hard to find affordable childcare. We ended up finding one spot for my daughter but later that year, that place became a popular spot and had a 2-year waiting list which I put my son on when I got pregnant with him. Unfortunately, due to staff turn over our spot slipped through the cracks and I had to find a new spot that was more expensive and was 40 minutes away from our home.

Every day, I would leave work early to pick up my daughter at her early childhood program and drive 45 minutes to pick up my son and then drive another 30 minutes to get home. Every single day. My daughters’ school started at 18 months so I did this for a little over a year and it was exhausting. I had flexibility with my job and my husband didn’t and this whole thing rested on my shoulders. We did what we had to do.

When I learned about what CareForAllChildren was doing, my excitement could not be contained. What they didn’t know is that I feel a deep passion and commitment to see a change in this area for mothers. I feel called to help moms and this is a major part of that. Last week I had the honor of speaking on a panel webinar sharing my experience as parent on how putting my child in childcare has been for me and many other families. CareForAllChildren is leading the way on this discussion and here are a few key things parents are dealing with here in America:

● More than 20% of American families are going into debt to pay for childcare and preschool.

● The United States loses $57 billion in revenue, wages, and productivity annually due to the childcare crisis.

● Affordable childcare should cost less than 10% of a household’s income, yet a majority of families are spending 30-50% of their take-home pay on childcare.

● Children with access to quality childcare are healthier, better educated, and happier.

● Families are the building blocks of a productive society. With over two-thirds of children

under the age of five living in households with both parents in the workforce, children are spending more time in childcare and early learning settings. As such, improving equal access to quality early childhood education and care holds the greatest promise to support children, families, and the economy.

● A growing body of research shows that access to quality care and learning in the first years of life is crucial for building a strong foundation that allows children to succeed

● Investing in early childhood education and care can help close the education gap, the income gap, and the gender gap.

So, what can you do? How can you help this become better for families?
